I Have the Pace. Why Am I Losing Places?

The Question

I'm reasonably quick in qualifying and can often start in the top five, but by the end of the race I've usually lost positions.

I don't crash often, but I seem to get overtaken more than I overtake.

How can I improve my racecraft without simply doing more races?

The Short Answer

The pace is already there.

The next step is learning how to convert that pace into race results.

Racecraft isn't simply about overtaking. It's about decision making.

Knowing when to attack. When to defend. When to wait. When the car ahead is likely to make a mistake. And when fighting for one position is going to cost you three.

What to Work On

Start by focusing on five things:

Patience
Not every opportunity needs to be taken immediately. Sometimes putting pressure on another driver and waiting for the better opportunity is faster than forcing the first one.

Prediction
Start watching what other drivers are doing before you reach them. Where are they weak? Where are they strong? Are they defending? Are their tyres beginning to go?

Replay Analysis
Don't only watch your incidents. Look at the moments where you lost or gained positions and ask what decision created the outcome.

Race With Better Drivers
League racing and stronger fields can expose you to drivers whose racecraft you can learn from. Watch what they do differently.

Think Beyond the Overtake
The fastest way past another car isn't always an immediate move. Sometimes it's creating the situation that gives you the better exit two corners later.

The Takeaway

You probably don't need more qualifying pace.

You need to turn the pace you already have into better decisions.

The lap time gets you into the fight. Racecraft determines what you do once you're there.
